How to Protect Files on Your FREE Cloud Storage?

So far we knew What is Cloud storage? How to get the best of FREE Cloud Storages?, How to Extract the maximum space form the best of cloud storages? and also knew How to manage your FREE cloud storage? but now the question is that are those really so secure as they claim to be? Well nothing is secure how it seems. Some services may have end to end encryption. Some encrypts the files itself. Some even encrypts the name of files but no single service provides all those services together.

All the cloud services uses almost same Amazon S3 Architecture, that’s why they are almost same internally. So the possible solution is to protect your files by yourself. The least you can do is to protect them with passwords. Like zipping them with passwords. But that zip can be broken. So the next step would be to encrypt your files. Now I assume that all of you know more or less what encryption is. And if anyone doesn’t know about it, simply google it or go to wikipedia.

Now as we are ONLY reviewing FREE things, from storages to managements. This article is also concentrating on the FREE services. So here it goes -

1) Cloudfogger: The current version is more versatile and easier to use than the original. You access most Cloudfogger functions from the right-click context menu in the file system (e.g., Windows Explorer). Security is of course the most important aspect of encryption software, and Cloudfogger has that well covered too with AES 256-bit encryption algorithm and PBKDF2 key derivation. It also provides client-side password recovery.

Cloudfogger provides client-side encryption for all files in any folders (up to 5 for the free version) you want to select. It integrates seamlessly with Dropbox, SkyDrive, Box, Google Drive, or any other cloud storage service. The cloud only sees encrypted files since that is all that actually exists in the folders. The files are visible locally as unencrypted files when you are signed in to the Cloudfogger app though. Cloudfogger implements these two views - internal and external - using on-the-fly encryption. Folders that you "Fogg" (auto-encrypt) serve as encrypted file containers. Fogging also applies a file system overlay that presents the folder contents to the user as unencrypted files.

Cloudfogger has quickly become part of my backup solution. I use Cloudfogger to encrypt a few selected folders in Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive. Now my encrypted files are synced between all the computers that I install Cloudfogger on. Because Cloudfogger encrypts one file at a time, open files are synced as soon as you save them. Cloudfogger currently provides client apps for Windows, Mac OS X and Android, with iPad and iPhone coming soon.

You can also encrypt and decrypt non-synced folders or single files via the Windows Explorer context menu. That's handy when you only want to encrypt a few files. For example, when you want to take them with you on a USB drive.

Cons: your computer is your key. Anyone having physical access to your computer can encrypt and decrypt file using your login pin, which is your password for all files, by default. You cant change keys for files. Also the syncing function is not automated. You have to manually download and upload files. The Android app is useless. I didnt found my files decrypted with it in my android phone.

2) BoxCrptor: It has both free and paid versions. Free version can make only 1 drive. Means you can only sync encrypted files in one cloud storage. It supports Dropbox, Google Drive, SygerSync and Skydrive. Custom folders can also be created and can be synced with any service through app and without the app. The interface is easy. The wizard mode is simple. It has iPhone and Android app too.

BoxCryptor provides most the same functions as Cloudfogger does. It is integrated with the file-system in a different way though. BoxCryptor uses an encrypted virtual-drive interface that is linked to an ordinary folder. Cloudfogger encrypts a single folder that it augments with a virtual-folder overlay to give cleartext access. I prefer the single folder solution, but other users prefer the virtual drive. For Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android

However, the BoxCryptor approach leaves users open to fatal mistakes. All files to be encrypted must be placed in the virtual drive or they will not be encrypted. Any files placed directly in the "encrypted folder" [their name] are not encrypted. You must go through the virtual drive to encrypt the files. That could be hard to remember, and there is no indication of mistakes. Of course files you see in the "encrypted folder" that were inserted there by the virtual drive are encrypted.

Cons: can only encrypt a volume having 2 GB of file size. Also has a mobile app which works better than cloudfogger but still useless. Double storage of files. Like if you want to encrypt 2 GB file. You have put it in the mounted drive. Then it will create another encrypted 2GB+ (as encryption needs more storage than the unencrypted files) file in your cloud sync folder. So here for a 2 GB file you need to waste 4 GB+ space of your HDD. Though cloudfogger removes this problem by directly encrypting the file on the fly.

3) TrueCrypt: This is a top-rated product for most uses, but there is a potential backup trap when it is used for files that will be synced or stored in the cloud. Encryption programs that create encrypted "volumes" (files that contain encrypted files) do not change the size of the volume (container file), and often - intentionally - do not change the modified date of the volume, even though files in the volume have been changed or added. The result can be that your cloud service does not recognize that the volume file has changed, and will fail to update the online copy.

TrueCrypt is an example of an encryption program that does not change the modified date of volume files (encrypted file container). However, some cloud backup services - Dropbox for example - check the hash value of volume files, not the date, and if that changes Dropbox stores the latest copy of the volume file. If you're using Dropbox, that makes TrueCrypt an excellent way to implement client-side encryption for your most sensitive files. SkyDrive, monitors the modified date - not a hash value - so TrueCrypt volumes are not updated in the cloud by SkyDrive after their content changes client-side.

Cons: No mobile app. Sync is painful. As the volume will be uploaded as a whole times after times. It will waste the bandwidth.

4) Ensafer: Similer service like boxcryptor. Though its in beta stage. A new player in market. Has applications for all desktop softwares but surprisingly no mobile app yet.

5)7zip: It offers strong encryption, but it is not convenient to work with for cloud applications. But yes it uses the same AES 256 bit protection. also it can encrypt the file names also. but then again while downloading it will be very difficult for you to identify it.

Cons: you have to delete, download and upload/sync files again and again to make your dropbox secure. No app for mobiles. Even the best 7Zipper app on android market failed to open encrypted 7Zip archives.

6)SecretSync: This is similar to BoxCryptor and Cloudfogger, but it requires Java, which has suffered a continuous string of newly revealed vulnerabilities. Evidently it also only works with Dropbox.

The Problems with Above Softwares -

1) Wastage of bandwidth.
2) Double storage space consumed in your HDD.
3) Have to rely on the Sync function of client software.
4) Manual update procedure if you use 7Zip or any zip utility.

The Needed Solution -

The only possible solution is enabling of encryption within the cloud services. And inbuilt the capability in their clients. Then only your files will be fully protected and secured. But this again creates problems with cloud storage's regulations. If they enable this service anyone can start to utilize this and start doing piracy, which is not wanted.

So the second solution is to share your encryption key with your cloud storage provider. By which they can check the files. Which then again start the question of privacy. But anyway it will be better than keeping totally unencrypted files there. But what if someone steals it from the service providers? Cloud storages are not so safe as we think they are. Recent dropbox problems proved that once again. Isnt it?

So?

The third solution would be to mix and match the above solutions. And then enjoy a relatively good service.

How to Manage All Free Cloud Storages at Once From One Centralised Space and Thats too for FREE?

Lets assume that you have got all the free cloud storages by the knowledge you got from HERE. But the question remains the same. How to manage all these? These HUGE spaces, how to manage all of them? How to keep then organised, categorised? It is not possible to keep on running all the Sync services at once. It is also not possible to open every service's website on the browser and if you need to move file from one location to another, you have to download the file to your computer and then again upload it to the different service provider. It is not possible at all, specially when you are on slow connection. Also remembering each and every cloud storage's credentials is a tiresome workload. How to bypass all of them? Is there any way?

YES fortunately there are. Many actually. But some of them are truly remarkable. They are -

1) Otixo: My personal #1 favourite is otixo. Because the service is free, you can add any number of cloud storages there. Also you can add other services like WebDAV also. You can move files among your cloud services like moving files from one folder to another. Cut. Copy. Paste is like a charm. Also you can search all the cloud services at once for any file.

Both the Personal and Business plan let you use all the features in Otixo without restriction. You can connect as many services as you like, share files, connect your desktop drive, etc. The Personal plan is for casual users of Otixo and has a network bandwidth limit of 2 GB server traffic per month. The Business plan lets you use Otixo as much as you want, without any monthly bandwidth limitation.

Bandwidth usage credits are the transactions in Otixo which count as network usage on our servers. You can think of this like your smartphone or home internet data plan which counts your internet usage. Otixo does not store your files, we only act as a gateway to your connected cloud services; therefore, we restrict the monthly network bandwidth used on our servers for the Personal accounts.

Otixo counts the server network transactions (which we have to pay for ourselves) against the account quotas. Therefore when you copy/move, upload, download or preview files through the Otixo servers, it counts against your monthly bandwidth quota. Other types of transactions are also deducted, like filesystem synchronizations, searches, etc., but are minimal in size.

When you run out of bandwidth for your monthly account quota, your account will still be active, but your cloud services will be "offline" and inaccessible until your next renewal date. You can always upgrade to an unlimited Business plan, or you can invite your friends or colleagues to get free permanent credits as a gift. The more you share Otixo, the bigger your monthly quota will get.

The BEST part is you will get 100 MB of bandwidth quota EXTRA when you refer another friend. But there is also a limit by which you can get only 1 GB of EXTRA bandwidth.

The interface is very polished & simple enough to use. Adding and deletion of accounts and files are CHARM. If you have used apple devices and softwares like iTunes, you will feel the interface remarkably known.

Cons: The limit of 1 GB bandwidth. And remember even service synchronization or file viewing is also falls under this category. So use this service WISELY. Another problem is absence of any mobile app. Where other competitors of same game has it.

2) Primadesk: Another sevice just like otixo. Interface is very good. Clean & clear. Has every feature Otixo has but the FREE account has several limitations. Like you can add only 5 accounts. Limited sharing and bandwidth. The biggest feature of using primadesk is that it has a full features iOS and Android app. Not ONLY the cloud storages, you can add your email accounts here too. And you can search among them too. save your attachments in cloud services.

3) Hojoki: Very new service. Now in its BETA stage. However it is very free now. Supports all the cloud platforms. And even some less known platforms also. The Current offer is that Hojoki users will get 25 GB of free space from BOX. So you might wanna grab that now. Cons: this is really not a place where you can manage your files from all the cloud storages. This is just a place where you can publish your file information. I don’t know that the feature will be available later or not. As i said earlier it is a very new service.

4) Gladinet: its not at all a free service. Its is just a service which maps your cloud storages to a network mapped drive and set that into your PC.

5) Joukuu: Its a windows program and the LITE version of it, which is a free version will give you ability to add only 3 service to it. which is Dropbox, Google Drive & Box. The interface is nice and identical to New Microsoft Zune music player. Cons: It has many many limitations in it's free version. Needless to say that this service scores LAST in this review.

The choice is yours. Enjoy these free services. YES i have added referrals for Otixo here and written much about it here but it doesn't mean that i am advertising for it here. i genuinely used all the above services myself and thus came to conclusion. This blog post is totally independent.

#3: Camera Uploads, a new feature at Dropbox where you get 500 MB for the first photos you upload from your mobile or camera by using either desktop or mobile app. And you will be getting 500 MB of another storage for every 500 MB of photos you upload till total 3 GB (500Mb for first use + 2.5 GB extra) and this will be added to your free space for life for free. Means After uploading even if you delete the pictures then too you will be getting that space. But finding 2.5 GB (YES you need 2.5 GB, because you will get the first 500 MB when you upload even a single picture from mobile or camera) worth of pictures is a daunting task. Also you have to upload it from camera SD card or mobile. But there are tricks to get that free space -

TRICK 1: Arrange 2.5 GB of pictures at your disposal, format your USB pendrive. Add a “DCIM” or “CAMERA” named folder in your pendrive's root directory (without the quotes obviously). And then remove and insert your pendrive in your pc and the dropbox application will automatically pop up and will ask you for uploading pictures using camera upload. Allow it and leave it while it is uploading. You will get the space when dropbox will realize the space.

TRICK 2: This trick needs a little more technical knowledge and at least 3 GB free space in your HDD and camera / mobile / pendrive. This is called “Real Camera Upload” Trick, The main star of this GUIDE. Follow some steps to do it -

a) Click on start menu/orb > Program Files > Accessories > Command Promp. Right click on it and choose “Run as Administrator” or simply type “cmd” (without quotes) in the start menu and Right click on it and choose “Run as Administrator”.

b) Type “fsutil file createnew C:\my_pic.jpg 609222656” at the command prompt following the exact order and without semicolons. Now here the “C:\” is the address, “my_pic.jpg” is the file name, “609222656” is the size in bytes.

c) A new file of the above name with 519 MB size will be created in C:\ drive.

d) You can change the drive address, file size and file name at your will.

e) THE MAIN TRICK HERE IS TO CREATE 6 (NOT 5 BUT 6) SEPARATE FILES USING ABOVE PROCEDURE WITH DIFFERENT NAME AND SIZE (NOT LESS THAN 510 MB). MEANS YOU HAVE TO INPUT THE ABOVE CODE 6 TIMES INTO COMMAND PROMPT WITH DIFFERENT NAME AND SIZE.

f) Now copy those files into your smartphone, upload them using dropbox. Or create a folder in pendrive and copy there and then upload.

g) You will see that the uploading will not take much time and bandwidth as the files are mostly filled with blanks. But after the realization of each update. dropbox will award you with size.

#4: Referrals, the single thing which can provide you with additional 16 GB of space. 500 MB for each referral and if you don’t have sort of friends, you can achieve this storage in no time. You need only 32 friends who will not only register themselves but also download the application and install it on their pc and login from there, by completing the total registering process. This process maybe time consuming but if you hold on to patience it will really pay you off.

First of all we should know what is cloud, cloud is a conceptual space where we set up a virtual machines filled with data and processes to work with those data and manage those data. Its is easier to install and maintain. Most of the cloud stays at datacentres scattered around the globe. This location is secure and it is totally decentralised. Cloud is a concept where we get a place where everything is connected with everything. And there is no need to download anything to work upon. everything is available for work, always on time, always online, anywhere, anyplace. It increased the productivity in a huge quantity.

Cloud storage is a model of networked online storage where data is stored in virtualized pools of storage which are generally hosted by third parties. Hosting companies operate large data centers, and people who require their data to be hosted buy or lease storage capacity from them. The data center operators, in the background, virtualize the resources according to the requirements of the customer and expose them as storage pools, which the customers can themselves use to store files or data objects. Physically, the resource may span across multiple servers.

It seems that everyone with a computer spends a lot of time acquiring data and then trying to find a way to store it. For some computer owners, finding enough storage space to hold all the data they've acquired is a real challenge. Some people invest in larger hard drives. Others prefer external storage devices like thumb drives or compact discs. Desperate computer owners might delete entire folders worth of old files in order to make space for new information. But some are choosing to rely on a growing trend: cloud storage.

While cloud storage sounds like it has something to do with weather fronts and storm systems, it really refers to saving data to an off-site storage system maintained by a third party. Instead of storing information to your computer's hard drive or other local storage device, you save it to a remote database. The Internet provides the connection between your computer and the database.

On the surface, cloud storage has several advantages over traditional data storage.

For example, if you store your data on a cloud storage system, you'll be able to get to that data from any location that has Internet access. You wouldn't need to carry around a physical storage device or use the same computer to save and retrieve your information. With the right storage system, you could even allow other people to access the data, turning a personal project into a collaborative effort. So cloud storage is convenient and offers more flexibility, but how does it work?

Here are hundreds of different cloud storage systems. Some have a very specific focus, such as storing Web e-mail messages or digital pictures. Others are available to store all forms of digital data. Some cloud storage systems are small operations, while others are so large that the physical equipment can fill up an entire warehouse. The facilities that house cloud storage systems are called data centers.

At its most basic level, a cloud storage system needs just one data server connected to the Internet. A client (e.g., a computer user subscribing to a cloud storage service) sends copies of files over the Internet to the data server, which then records the information. When the client wishes to retrieve the information, he or she accesses the data server through a Web-based interface. The server then either sends the files back to the client or allows the client to access and manipulate the files on the server itself.

Cloud storage systems generally rely on hundreds of data servers. Because computers occasionally require maintenance or repair, it's important to store the same information on multiple machines. This is called redundancy. Without redundancy, a cloud storage system couldn't ensure clients that they could access their information at any given time. Most systems store the same data on servers that use different power supplies. That way, clients can access their data even if one power supply fails.

Not all cloud storage clients are worried about running out of storage space. They use cloud storage as a way to create backups of data. If something happens to the client's computer system, the data survives off-site. It's a digital-age variation of "don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Here i tried to compare almost all possible FREE service available on the web. I personally tested all the service myself. It took much time but without testing them all i cant be sure to find the BEST.

Dropbox: offers 2GB initial free storage, 2GB max file size upload, 500MB extra free storage/friend, and 16GB Max Storage Ceiling (including max extra bonuses)

Shared: Latest addition to the FREE cloud storage and its giving 100 GB of whooping storage for saving file. it will make every other free storage company go out of market. its even giving referral programs. interface is super clean and swift. uploading and downloading is nice. logo seems inspired from SkyDrive.

Rapidshare: the oldest data storage company now changing their public picture as a cloud storage company though the basic systems are same, they are offering UNLIMITED free storage. sync is a premium only feature here. and free account will get deleted after 90 days of inactivity. software support available. but to the premium only.

Mediafire: another data sharing company trying to change their public image. offering 50 GB of free storage to the basic users.sync is not available.though their software, which is unusually large, only gives file download and upload feature. There is an inactivity time for the free users but they stayed shady in that part.Cons: every file uploaded is by default public, means anyone can access it if they search it, there are several searching sites out like Filestube.

Adrive: Probably the best among all HUGE data storage company. It is providing 50 GB of storage.features are basic.no sync.but the best part is that they are not deleting files due to inactivity.mobile apps are available.desktop apps are for premium only.though the web interface is nice.

Fileserve: Another file sharing site turned cloud storage offering whooping 500 GB, YES its not an typo. but with limitations like 60 days inactivity. but if you are regular on net. you can consider it once.

Restricted File Storage Service

Lenovo Cloud Storage (LCS): 5 GB sygersync powered cloud storage free for LENOVO users.

Asus Webstorage: 5 GB for asus users.

AcerCloud: even details are for acer products only. the only beneficial thing is that you can acess the space from any android phone. its more like an iCloud service for acer.

AT&TLocker: 5 GB of free storage for AT&T branded internet connection and mobile phones, tablets, pc.

Unique File Storage Services

Symform: 10 GB storage. But user can get 100 GB of cloud storage if they share their 200 GB of unused HDD space. And the more user will share the more they can get. This is a very unique service but user have to maintain a 2:1 ratio between local contribution to cloud space used.

Bitcasa: another unique file storage company. it offers INFINITY storage, sync, client software, mobile app, web interface for FREE. When a folder is shared by it, it actually uploads the files to their storage and converts the folder to a network mapped drive. When you open the folder you will see that the files are there. When you try to open it they will be downloaded and then opened. When you close the file it will edit the file and upload. Very interesting feature indeed. The only problem which i found while testing it that the software is not very stable in windows 7, it is buggy, it causes system instability and to use this service you have to have a very fast connection with broad bandwidth. The interface is very fine. Though this service should be tried.

But unlike other this service has a very much scope to increase it's space to the almost 15 times of its free offering. The sync feature is awesome. The support, forum, blog is nice. Yearly events which includes superb gifts, like 100 GB space free for life. Highest UPLOAD & DOWNLOAD speeds. File Sharing capability even with the non Dropbox users. The biggest feature now is maybe its Facebook integration. You can share files from Dropbox to Facebook in one click. Unlike other services Dropbox doesn’t compromises features in it's free version. You only pay to get more space or business functions. But the majority of its feature is available for free also. The interface is very easy, nice, simple, clutter and advertisement free. 2. Skydrive: A remarkable service from Windows maker Microsoft. Offering 7 GB straight at first for FREE. Storage & sync is available at its best. The interface is very fine, following Metro style. The biggest feature of Skydrive is that it is totally integrated into Windows 8 and Upcoming Office 2013. also Skydrive offers online document editing using Office 2013 web interface and its just like using the desktop service. This is very unique. The old loyal customers have already get 25 GB storage in their account but new users have to start with 7 GB. It combines all your digital life, mail + calender + storage in one place. Sync available for all platform. YES even for Apple, without any *conditions (please learn from MS, apple). Cons: It has also the web's strictest DMCA policy. It deletes files and accounts just even on a suspect of copyright infringement or on illegal contents. Try to upload a semi nude hand drawn picture and BOOM, your account is gone. Though it is the most cleanest and secure place to store your files but before uploading here please scan your files for any illegal files which may break company policy.

3. Google Drive: Offering 5 GB of space. Integrated into google chrome. Means it is available cross platform. offline data editing is possible only with document and spreadsheet. Sync software is available. Offline documents can be viewed. The biggest feature of google drive that documents saved or converted using google document format wont be counted towards the storage space. So you can practically save unlimited number of documents here. Can work on team collaboration on documents. Can convert, upload and download files from any format to any other format. This is the best collaboration function, which is absent in all other services. Google actually gives its users total of 16 GB storage. 10 GB in gmail + 5 GB in drive + 1 GB in picasa. Cons: only if it would combine all its storage in one place and gives its user a straight 16 GB at once, it would become the best cloud service of the net and will give Skydrive a hard time.
